Understanding Your Cover Options
A plain-language guide to the risk insurance products we advise on at CCF Financial Protection.
When it comes to protecting yourself and your family, the range of insurance products available can feel confusing. At CCF Financial Protection, we believe you should understand exactly what you’re covered for — and why. Here’s a clear breakdown of the core types of risk insurance we advise on, and what each one is designed to do.
Life Insurance
Life insurance — sometimes called term life or death cover — pays a lump sum to your nominated beneficiaries if you die. It’s the most fundamental form of financial protection and the starting point for most families.
The right level of life cover depends on:
- Your outstanding debts, including your mortgage
- Your family’s ongoing living expenses
- How many years of income your loved ones would need to replace
- Any future costs you’d want covered, like your children’s education
Many Australians already have some life insurance through their superannuation — but default super cover is often inadequate, and the definitions of what qualifies for a payout can be surprisingly restrictive.
Income Protection Insurance
Your income is the engine behind everything — your mortgage, your lifestyle, your family’s security. Income protection insurance replaces a portion of your income (generally up to 70%) if you’re unable to work due to illness or injury.
It’s arguably the most important cover for working Australians, because the risk of being off work for an extended period is far higher than most people realise.
Key features to understand include:
- Waiting period — how long before payments begin (commonly 30, 60, or 90 days)
- Benefit period — how long payments continue (2 years, 5 years, or to age 65)
- Agreed value vs indemnity value policies — how your benefit is calculated
- Own occupation vs any occupation definitions — how ‘unable to work’ is defined
We take the time to explain these differences and help you choose a structure that balances cost with genuine protection.
Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) Insurance
TPD insurance pays a lump sum if you suffer an injury or illness that permanently prevents you from ever returning to work. It’s designed to cover the significant, long-term costs that come with a life-changing disability — including home modifications, ongoing care, debt repayment, and lost future earnings.
Like life insurance, TPD is often included in superannuation funds — but the level of cover and the definitions used matter enormously. ‘Any occupation’ TPD, common in super funds, is far harder to claim on than ‘own occupation’ cover. We help you understand the difference and make sure your policy will actually pay out if you need it to.
Trauma Insurance (Critical Illness Cover)
Trauma insurance pays a lump sum if you’re diagnosed with a specified serious illness or medical event — such as cancer, a heart attack, a stroke, or major surgery. Unlike income protection, it pays regardless of whether you can return to work.
The payment can be used however you need — to fund treatment not covered by Medicare, to take time off to recover, to pay down debt, or to reduce financial pressure while you focus on getting better.
Trauma cover is particularly valuable because:
- Medical advances mean more people survive serious illnesses — but recovery takes time and money
- It fills a gap that income protection and TPD don’t always cover
- It provides a financial buffer at an incredibly stressful time
Business Protection Insurance
For small business owners, the financial risks of death, disability, or serious illness are compounded — it’s not just your personal finances at stake, it’s your business and your employees too.
Business protection strategies include:
- Key person insurance — protecting the business from the financial impact of losing a critical person
- Buy/sell insurance — funding a business succession if a partner or co-owner dies or becomes disabled
- Business expenses insurance — covering fixed overheads if you’re unable to work
We work closely with small business owners across the Coffs Coast to build protection strategies that keep their businesses — and their families — secure.
Reviewing Your Existing Cover
Already have insurance? That’s great — but when did you last review it? Life changes quickly. A policy you took out five years ago may no longer reflect your income, your debts, your family size, or your health status.
We offer policy reviews at no obligation, and we regularly find clients who are either underinsured, overinsured, or paying for cover that isn’t structured to their advantage.
